Two weeks ago today, I invited you to join me in taking on a green goal for the month of April in a little project I am calling Project: Spring Green.
Many of you shared your goals in the comments on that post, and I am so excited that you are ready to take on a new challenge with me!
As I've told you, I am going to begin composting.
When I was a little girl, we spent lots of time at my grandparents' house in Kansas City. My grandfather had created beautiful gardens in their backyard - some for growing flowers and some for his spectacular tomato plants. Oh, goodness. A wave of giddy nostalgia just washed over me as I am sitting here remembering the taste of a warm tomato fresh from the vine on a sunny summer morning.
Heaven.
I digress.
My grandfather had a large compost heap in the backyard as well. It was an old goldfish pond that he had filled in, and I can remember carrying scraps of food out to the compost heap after dinnertime. As a child, I didn't appreciate or understand how valuable compost is to a gardener, but I can clearly and distinctly remember that earthy smell that surrounded the heap.
I'm inspired to stay true to my roots in this project, and so although there are fancier, more high-tech approaches to composting available today, I'm just going with an old-fashioned heap.
- I've figured out the perfect spot in our backyard, and I am going to spend time tomorrow and Friday getting it all set up. (Simple Organic's Gardening 101: Make Your Own Compost and Starting a Garden with Repurposed Materials are what I'll be relying on heavily for guidance here.)
- I still need to find some sort of container for collecting food bits to go into the heap.
- I'm a little nervous about getting the green-to-brown ratio just right, so I'm preparing myself for experimentation and adjustments as needed.
That's my starting point.
How about you?
Do you have some concrete steps to take to help you reach your Project: Spring Green goal?
I would love to hear how you are starting your project. Leave a comment with your action plan, or if you are blogging about this goal on your own blog, make sure to leave us a link!
Plan on another check-in to tell about our progress with our projects on April 14th!
