Our project that began on St. Patrick's Day ends today!
I've so enjoyed hearing about your green living goals and how tackling one of those goals has played out for you in the month of April.
I'm happy to say we've begun our very simple approach to composting. As I shared earlier, I decided to just go with a basic, rustic, old-fashioned heap (for now, anyway):
I'll be curious to see if animals or insects become too big of an issue. I'm also a little nervous about finding the proper balance between green/nitrogen and brown/carbon. I'm trying not to stress out about it too much though.
It was really helpful for me to have a challenge! Do you find that to be true, too? My usual approach is to think and dream about a project without really putting forth the effort to follow-through. Having a start date and check-ups along the way really helped me get motivated.
Here are some others who were motivated by the Project: Spring Green Challenge:
Dionna of Code Name Mama wrote about getting rid of toxic cleaners and followed-up with Six Reasons Parents Should Consider Using Natural Household Cleaners - a great article with helpful resources!
Charla of Confessions of a Stay At Home Mom wanted to stop accepting plastic bags from any store and try to buy more locally grown produce. She told me the plastic bag challenge didn't work out quite as well as she had hoped, but is renewing her commitment to that goal!
Becky of Clean Mama decided to stop buying paper towels. She emailed this week to say she still hasn't bought any paper towels and that she is loving being paper-free in the kitchen. YAY for kitchen cloth!
Finally, my sweet friend (since 8th grade!!!) Kathy emailed me to say she and her family had accomplished these things in the month of April:
* has been storing scraps for compost starting in March
* hubby built a compost (see pics-wooden compost)
* went to farmers market & bought herbs, peppers, and two kinds of berries, okra, and tomato plants and planted in our raised beds gardens my hubby built last year.
* planted in our house for the window sill and for caleb to watch it grow (marigolds & cilantro)
* Trying to not use plastic AND heat....(ie-heating up the kids food in plastic)
And here are pictures of them celebrating their changes this spring:
So inspiring!
Thanks to those who took up the challenge with me. What should we take on next?
